About Greenwood Bushcraft
Greenwood Bushcraft is one of IYVS's direct provision programmes. It proves that when mainstream youth volunteering fails neurodivergent young people, specialist alternatives can and should exist.
Operating across Hampshire, Greenwood Bushcraft teaches practical woodland and nature skills — fire lighting, shelter building, tool use, and wild environment awareness — in a setting designed with neurodivergent participants in mind, from environment to instruction to support.
This is not mainstream bushcraft with accommodations bolted on. This is a programme intentionally built for neurodivergent young people from the ground up.
Why This Matters
Many neurodivergent young people are excluded from mainstream youth activities — not because they can't participate, but because the environment isn't designed for them. Mainstream volunteer-led programmes often lack the training, flexibility, and neurodiversity understanding needed to adapt.
Greenwood Bushcraft exists because this shouldn't be acceptable. It's proof that when we design with neurodivergent young people in mind from the start, they don't just participate — they thrive.
Supporting Neurodivergent Young People
Bushcraft is particularly well-suited as a supportive activity for neurodivergent young people. The hands-on, tactile nature of the skills provides sensory engagement, while working at the pace of the natural world removes the time pressure and social pressure common in other activities.
Our coaching approach recognises that neurodivergent participants may benefit from:
- Clear, consistent routines and instructions
- A calm, low-sensory outdoor environment
- Individual attention and pacing
- Practical, hands-on tasks that build tangible skills
- Focus on personal achievement rather than comparison
Our Approach
Bushcraft draws on traditional woodland skills, teaching young people to work with the natural environment through patient, repeatable practice — building confidence one skill at a time.
Skills Training
Instruction in core bushcraft techniques, from fire lighting and shelter building through to tool use and woodland navigation.
Sensory Engagement
Hands-on, tactile activities in the natural environment, helping participants engage through touch, smell, and movement.
Emotional Regulation
Using the calm, unhurried rhythm of outdoor practical skills to support self-regulation and emotional wellbeing.
Supportive Environment
Creating a calm, welcoming space where young people can develop at their own pace without pressure or judgement.
Expansion & Scaling
Greenwood Bushcraft is expanding. We're fundraising for tools and safety equipment to scale our reach across Hampshire and beyond. The demand for this kind of specialist provision is clear and urgent.
