Supporting Scout Volunteers — Especially in SEN
Scout volunteers who support neurodivergent young people often lack training and frameworks. We're changing that.

Welcome to the Scout Volunteers section of Independent Youth Volunteer Support (IYVS).
Many Scout volunteers support neurodivergent young people but lack specific training or frameworks to do this effectively. We're here to change that — providing training, resources, grants, and support to help Scout volunteers and groups build the capacity to include and support SEN young people.
We also provide independent mediation support when conflicts arise, and we work to improve systems and practices across Scouting to better serve neurodivergent young people and their volunteers.
Capability Building for SEN
Scout volunteers and groups can access grants, training, and guidance to build capacity for supporting neurodivergent young people. This includes funding for professional development, practical frameworks, and mentorship support.
Volunteer Wellbeing
Scout volunteers often juggle multiple roles and responsibilities. We're committed to helping you maintain your physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing while supporting young people. Our resources focus on recognising burnout, building resilience, and creating sustainable volunteering practices.
Skills Development & Training
Becoming a confident, effective volunteer takes time and the right support. Whether you're brand new to Scouting or have years of experience, we share practical guidance on leadership skills, section-specific training, and continuous professional development to help you thrive in your role.
Community & Connection
Volunteering can sometimes feel isolating, especially in smaller groups. We're building opportunities for Scout volunteers to connect with peers, share experiences, and celebrate their achievements together. These connections are vital to feeling part of a supportive community.
Advocacy & Systems Change
We listen to your challenges and work to create systemic improvements. By understanding the barriers you face in supporting neurodivergent young people, we advocate for better structures, policies, and support systems that enable Scout volunteers and SEN young people to thrive.
Dispute Resolution & Mediation
When conflicts arise, we provide independent, confidential mediation services and support for Scout volunteers navigating interpersonal conflicts, formal complaints, or suspension processes. You don't have to face these challenges alone.
