About Zanshin Archery
Zanshin Archery is IYVS's flagship direct provision programme. It proves that when mainstream youth volunteering fails neurodivergent young people, specialist alternatives can and should exist.
Operating in Hampshire as a Non-Club Provider with Archery GB, Zanshin combines structured coaching with Zen philosophy and breathwork practices. Every session is designed with neurodivergent participants in mind — from environment to instruction to support.
This is not mainstream archery with accommodations bolted on. This is a programme intentionally built for neurodivergent young people from the ground up.
Why This Matters
Many neurodivergent young people are excluded from mainstream youth activities — not because they can't participate, but because the environment isn't designed for them. Mainstream volunteer-led programmes often lack the training, flexibility, and neurodiversity understanding needed to adapt.
Zanshin exists because this shouldn't be acceptable. It's proof that when we design with neurodivergent young people in mind from the start, they don't just participate — they thrive.
Supporting Neurodivergent Young People
Archery is particularly well-suited as a supportive activity for neurodivergent young people. The structured, repetitive nature of the sport provides predictability, while the focus on individual progression rather than competition removes social pressure.
Our coaching approach recognises that neurodivergent participants may benefit from:
- Clear, consistent routines and instructions
- A calm, low-sensory environment
- Individual attention and pacing
- Mindfulness techniques integrated into practice
- Focus on personal achievement rather than comparison
Our Approach
The programme is named after zanshin — a Japanese concept central to martial arts and archery that refers to a state of relaxed alertness and continued awareness after an action is completed.
Skills Training
Instruction in archery techniques, from basic form and safety through to developing consistent, accurate shooting.
Mindfulness Integration
Incorporating Zen principles and conscious breathing exercises into every session, helping participants find calm in the draw.
Emotional Regulation
Using breathwork and the meditative aspects of archery to support self-regulation and emotional wellbeing.
Supportive Environment
Creating a calm, welcoming space where young people can develop at their own pace without pressure or judgement.
Expansion & Scaling
Zanshin is expanding. We're fundraising for coaching equipment — bows, arrows, and safety gear — to scale our reach across Hampshire and beyond. The demand for this kind of specialist provision is clear and urgent.
